DIGOXIN:-

B. S.: Digoxin is a cardiac glycoside obtained from the dried leaves of Digitalis pupurea and Digitalis lanata belonging to Family: Scorphulariaceae.

The digitalis purpurea and the digitalis lanata contains primary glycosides lanatoside A, B, and C. Amongst them the lanatoside C is different and on mild hydrolysis split the Glucose from lanatoside C leaving behind secondary glycosides, digoxin.

ESTIMATION OF DIXOINE

Assay of Digoxin: IP 66

Test and standard solution:- Weigh about 40 mg of test & std Digoxin, dissolved it in 95% of Ethanol and make up volume to 50 ml.

Pipette out 5 ml from the above stock solution and make up the volume to 100 ml with 95% ethanol.

Assay:- Pipette out 5 ml from the above solution and add 3 ml of Alkaline picric acid. Allow to stand for 30 minutes. & Measure the absorbance at 495 nm using as the blank a mixture of 5 ml of ethanol  (95%) and 3 ml of alkaline picric acid solution.

Calculate the content of digoxin from the absorbance obtained by repeating the operation using digoxin RS in place of the substance under examination.

UTILIZATION OF DIGOXIN:- 

DIGOXIN USES:-

DIGOXIN ACTION :-

1. Digoxin is employed as Cardio-tonic.

2. Used in various forms like tablets or capsules in the treatment of congestive cardiac

failure, atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation and peroxymal atrial tachycardia.

3. Employed in the treatment of CHF.

4. It is also used in diuretic in cardiac edema.
