EXPERIMENT NO. 12. DETERMINATION OF MOISTURE CONTENT (LOSS ON DRYING) FOR GIVEN CRUDE DRUG SAMPLE

PHARMACOGNOSY AND PHYTOCHEMISTRY – I PRACTICAL

EXPERIMENT NO.1 2

Aim: Determination of moisture content (loss on drying) for given crude drug sample.

Reference: Mayur R. Bhurat, Md. Rageeb Md. Usman, Sanjay A. Nagdev, Practical Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry – I, Published by S. Vikas And Company (Medical Publisher) Ppage. No. 66, 67.

Requirements:

Instruments: Hot air oven, Digital balance, Desicator.

Apparatus: Porcelain dish or Petri dish

Chemicals: Crude drug sample

Theory:

Loss on drying:

Loss on drying is determined by heating the sample below its melting point in an oven and it includes all volatile matter including water content and solvents.

Loss on drying is a technique removing not only water but removing all the volatile impurities. like alcohol etc. from water.

Procedure:

By Oven method:

1. Weigh an empty porcelain dish.

2. Take 5 gm of the crude drug sample in weighed porcelain dish.

3. Put this sample in oven and adjust 105°c temperature.

4. Keep your sample in oven for three hours.

5. After that remove your sample and cool it in desiccator and weight 1t.

RESULT: Loss on drying for given crude drug sample is calculated and it is.......
